Dutch Baroque Painter

Pieter de Bloot was a Dutch Golden Age painter, born in Rotterdam in 1601. Not much is known about his early life or artistic training, but he is believed to have studied under the painter Willem Buytewech in Rotterdam.

De Bloot primarily painted genre scenes, or scenes from everyday life, often featuring figures engaged in domestic activities such as cooking, cleaning, or playing music. His style was characterized by its realism and attention to detail, and he was known for his skill in depicting light and shadow.

In 1625, de Bloot became a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Delft, and he spent much of his career working in that city. He also spent time in Leiden, Haarlem, and Amsterdam, and his works were collected by many prominent art collectors of the time.

One of de Bloot's most famous works is "The Kitchen Maid," which is now in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. This painting, completed around 1620, depicts a young woman peeling vegetables in a kitchen. The painting is notable for its careful attention to the textures and colors of the objects in the scene, as well as for the soft, diffused light that falls across the figure.

De Bloot died in Delft in 1658 at the age of 57. His work has been exhibited in many major museums around the world, including the Louvre in Paris, the National Gallery in London, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
