Simon Vouet (1590-1649) was a French Baroque painter who is considered one of the most important artists of the 17th century. He was born in Paris and trained under his father, a painter and art dealer. He later studied with the Italian painter Lodovico Cigoli and then with the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens in Rome.

After returning to France in 1627, Vouet was appointed as the court painter to King Louis XIII. He was a prolific artist who painted a wide range of subjects, including religious and mythological scenes, portraits, and landscapes. His style was heavily influenced by his time in Italy and he is credited with introducing the Baroque style to France.

Vouet's paintings are characterized by their dramatic use of light and shadow, rich colors, and emotional intensity. His works often feature figures in motion, as well as a sense of theatricality and grandeur. Some of his most famous works include "The Toilet of Venus," "The Triumph of Bacchus," and "St. Jerome in Meditation."

In addition to his work as a painter, Vouet was also a teacher and a founding member of the French Academy of Painting and Sculpture. He played an important role in the development of French art during the 17th century and his influence can be seen in the work of later artists such as Nicolas Poussin and Charles Le Brun.
