American Impressionist Painter

Robert Vonnoh was an American Impressionist painter born on September 17, 1858, in Hartford, Connecticut. He was one of the leading figures of the American Impressionist movement, known for his plein-air landscapes and portraits.

Vonnoh was raised in a family of artists, and his father, Eugene Vonnoh, was a well-known sculptor. In 1875, he enrolled at the Massachusetts Normal Art School, where he studied under George Senseney and Frederick Crowninshield. After graduating, he spent time in Paris, studying under Gustave Boulanger and Jules-Joseph Lefebvre at the Académie Julian.

In 1886, Vonnoh returned to the United States and settled in New York City. He quickly became a prominent figure in the city's art scene and exhibited his work at the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Society of American Artists.

In 1891, Vonnoh moved to Boston, where he became a faculty member at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. During his time in Boston, he began to focus more on plein-air painting, and his work became more impressionistic.

In 1898, Vonnoh moved to the rural town of Old Lyme, Connecticut, where he joined the Old Lyme Art Colony. He spent the rest of his life there, painting the landscapes and people of the surrounding area.

Vonnoh's work is characterized by his loose brushwork and vibrant use of color. He was particularly skilled at capturing the effects of light and atmosphere in his outdoor scenes. Some of his most famous works include "In Flanders Fields," "Sunflowers," and "The White Parasol."

Vonnoh died on January 18, 1933, in Old Lyme, Connecticut, at the age of 74. His work continues to be celebrated today, and his paintings can be found in museums and private collections throughout the United States.
